SAILING
FUNDAMENTALS
Inland Sailing
School offers courses that lead to advancing levels of American
Sailing Association certification. We also offer
private lessons tailored to the needs of the individual sailor.
Our Sailing Fundamentals class contains the first two ASA levels
of certification. A brief description of each is provided
below. We offer them together because Basic Keelboat
Sailing certification establishes a strong foundation in boat
handling under sail which includes; points of sail, rigging,
nomenclature, tacking, gibing, rules of the road, safety, and
person overboard. Basic Coastal Cruising certification
builds upon the sailing skills learned in Basic Keelboat Sailing
and adds the docking, maneuvering, and motoring skills required
while under auxiliary power. Teaching them together allows
sailors to gain the sailing and auxiliary power skills necessary
to maneuver within a marina and to move to open water for the
pure sailing experience.
Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101):
Learn to sail
a boat in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar
waters without supervision. This is a preparatory level
with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.
Course is approved by the National Association of Boating Law
Administrators (NASBLA) and U.S. Coast Guard as a recognized
Safe Boating Course. As such, it meets all requirements
for mandatory education and licensing for every state in the
United States. For boat owners, many insurance
companies offer discounts for successful completion of a Safe
Boating Course. Prerequisite: None.
Basic
Coastal Cruising (ASA 103):
Learn to
cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and
crew on an auxiliary (motor) powered sailboat of about 20 to 40
feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.
Builds upon the skills learned in Basic Keelboat Sailing.
Prerequisite: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification.
Provided
materials: Sailing Fundamentals, by Gary Jobson,
Official International Log Book, Basic Keelboat Sailing/Safe
Boating Examination, and Basic Coastal Cruising Examination.
